Tips To Overcome the Fear of Going to the Dentist

Many of us fear going to the dentist. Statistics show that one out of four people do not simply fear going to the dentist, but dread the entire experience. There are 5-8 % of people that avoid the dentist due the fear of going to the dentist! For many it is not an enjoyable experience, but fortunately there are tips that can make the trip an ease.
Here’s some advice to overcome the fear of going to the dentist, and to make your future trip worry-free.
§  Find a dentist that suits you, and is understanding. Get your know your dentist.
§  Share your fear of going to the dentist with the dentist so that he/she knows, and will do their best to accommodate your needs. For example the dentist and yourself can come up with a hand signal that will allow the dentist to know that you want them to stop in order to give yourself a break. This will allow you to feel more in control, and more at ease.
§  Bring a friend or family member with you! They can accompany you and help you with your fear of going to the dentist.
§  Pick an early appointment time. This will allow you to get your appointment out of your way first thing in the morning.
§  Start your first visit with a simple appointment, such as a cleaning. Work your way up with longer procedures once you feel comfortable with the dentist, and the environment.
§  Get to know the rest of the staff in the office to familiarize yourself with the environment.
§  Listen to music during your appointment to distract you from the procedure.
§  Don’t be afraid to ask the dentist any questions that you may have. Familiarize yourself with dental service.
§  Relax yourself with breathing techniques. Take big breathes in and out.

A Guide on Manual and Electronic Toothbrushes!

Electric toothbrushes have become more and more popular since the 1990’s, but the real question is. Are they better than manual toothbrushes? From a dental professional point of view, there are several pros and cons to both techniques, which I will discuss further.
Manual Toothbrushes
·         Pros: – there are multiple toothbrush styles, so patients can choose the one that they enjoy best (though I would always suggest a soft or extra soft toothbrush… to be explained later) – easy to travel with… no need for batteries or chargers – very inexpensive.

·         Cons: – you MUST use the proper brushing technique that your dental professional has instructed you to use (which can be difficult and time consuming) – if you use the WRONG technique and the WRONG toothbrush, you can cause detrimental damage to your teeth and gingiva (gums) including gingival recession and abfractions (loss of enamel).

Electric Toothbrushes
·         Pros: – Easy to use… all you have to do is hold the toothbrush head at a 45 degree angle and rest it on the teeth, and the job is done, plain and simple – It takes less time and less work to do a BETTER job, in removing plaque and debris from your teeth – Most electric toothbrushes have timers and technique indicators, giving you less to worry about as you brush your teeth… also easier for children to gage how long they should be brushing – Because it is electric, patients feel they’re teeth are CLEANER than if they did it with a manual toothbrush.

·         Cons: – you must ensure your toothbrush is always charged… if the battery is not charged, HOW WILL YOU BRUSH YOUR TEETH????? – COST… electric toothbrushes cost significantly more than manual toothbrushes – they can be easily broken, so you need.

At the end of the day, the type of toothbrush you use is up to you. You simply need to acquire the knowledge required to brush appropriately for your unique dental situation – this information can be attained by your dentist at ottawa downtown dentistry.

Ottawa Dental Cavity Info

We all know sugar isn’t good for you teeth, but the question is, why is this so? Sugar is associated with tooth decay. This means that the bacteria on teeth that create plaque get their energy from sugar. Therefore the more sugar we intake, the more energy bacteria have to turn into plaque! Some bacteria even then use sugar to as glue, and therefore the bacteria sticks to your teeth. Saliva helps to wash away the bacteria from your teeth, but due to it being glued to your teeth it doesn’t come off as easily.
So why is formation of plaque bad? This is because our teeth are covered in enamel. Enamel is what protects our teeth and keeps them strong. When plaque is formed on teeth it creates acid, and this acid is what breaks down the enamel on our teeth. This leaves us with less and less enamel, which eventually leads to holes, or cavities in our teeth. The holes can get bigger, resulting in big cavities.
Now you’re probably thinking, oh no, do I have to give up cookies, cake, ice cream, and all my favorite sweets in order to avoid cavities? Well, the answer is, no, sugar does not have to be completely avoided (what a relief…), but yes, it does have to be monitored in order to maintain cavity free teeth.
Here are a couple of steps to insure you can still enjoy some sugar in your life, while keeping your teeth in good condition:
·         Maintain regular dental check ups. A toothbrush cannot always wash off all plaque. Dentists reach spots in our teeth to make sure all the plaque is gone.
·         After eating sugar, make sure you brush your teeth to remove the sugar from your teeth. This should be done after eating sweets, as well as in the morning and night.
·         Limit your sugar intake; for example, try your coffee without sugar in the morning for once!
·         Floss your teeth to get any sugar that is stuck in between your teeth.

Now go on and enjoy your dessert tonight, but make sure your brush well!

Want brighter teeth? What are your options…

Teeth naturally darken with age – as a result of consuming staining food or drink, tobacco, or in cases where teeth have had root canals (and the tooth is now dead). Though teeth are not naturally bright white, rather a light grey/yellow shade, everyone wants a ‘Hollywood’ smile – it is attainable, but how?
Surface whiteners are usually in form of toothpastes with the addition of special abrasives to improve the products ability to remove stain. Cons: The effectiveness of these products is minimal, so if you have severe staining, you should choose one of the following options.
Vital teeth bleaching (teeth that are living) This form of teeth whitening can be done two different ways.
- In office vital teeth bleaching: Your dental professional will apply a hydrogen peroxide/carbomide peroxide product direct on the teeth, usually in high concentrations. A laser or LED light will be applied for a decided interval (to be decided between yourself and your dental professional) which activates the product. This is usually the fastest way to achieve a brighter smile – dramatic results will be seen immediately after the treatment.
Cons: Because a high concentration product is used, your teeth are susceptible to sensitivity and your gingival (gums) can be burned and become inflamed if not isolated properly. You will also become more susceptible to stain for at least a day after treatment because the LED or laser will open the pores in your teeth to produce a desired result, and until they brighten, you are at a higher risk to stain.

Straighten Your Teeth Faster With Ottawa Damon Braces

Florence Dentistry (The Ottawa Downtown Dentist) offers a wide variety of services and procedures from dental cleanings all the way to specialized orthodontic procedures such as Damon Braces. Florence Dentistry’s Dr. Edit Dragoi is one of the few dentists in Ottawa who does Damon Braces. What are Damon Braces? In a nutshell, Damon braces allow for orthodontic treatment to be done more efficiently.
Now let's take a further look at what exactly Damon Braces are. Like regular braces, the main focus is on teeth straightening and alignment. Damon braces straighten your teeth faster, dental  implant is also good option for straightening teeth but it takes more time as compare to damon braces. Which means that fewer appointments are needed as well as usually no extractions or expanders are involved in the process.
How does this work? These braces use a bracket that is self-ligating. This means that the bracket holds the wire in place, due to the fact that the bracket has a component that holds the wires in place. Unlike regular braces, there is no need for o-rings to secure the wires in place. The wires used in these braces continue to move for several weeks, which as mentioned earlier, allows for less frequent visits. Not only are the visits less frequent, but also they are usually faster due to the nature of the brackets.

Other advantages of the Damon Braces are their constant results. These braces constantly deliver satisfactory results, leaving the majority of Ottawa patients happy. Now the question is, are these braces the right choice for you? Come to Florence Density (The Ottawa Downtown Dentist), to set up an appointment with Dr. Edit Dragoi. Discuss whether these braces are a good choice for you, seek information on your insurance coverage, and get on the track to great results!

What is Dental Implant Therapy ?

Lost a tooth? A dental implant may be your best option!

A dental implant is an artificial root that is surgically placed within the bone of the jaw to replace a missing tooth (or even to hold an attached denture or bridge). An implant can be a magnificent replacement for an individual who has lost a tooth due to periodontal disease, injury or extraction.

There are two forms of dental implant therapy

Endosteal:

This is the most common type of implant available – the method is placing a screw within the bone of the jaw.

Subperiosteal:

This type of implant is placed adjacent to the bone, with the metal framework protruding through the gingiva (gums) to hold the prosthesis. This type of dental implant is best for patients who cannot wear conventional dentures and/or who have minimal bone height within the jaw

Are you a candidate for a dental implant?

The ideal candidate for a dental implant would be a patient with good oral health and without any periodontal disease. Adequate bone is required for a dental implant and if there are insufficient bone levels, bone grafting would be necessary.

Specific reasons and treatments that require dental implant therapy
  • Replacing a single tooth: self-explanatory… one implant attached to one crown
  • Replacing several teeth: implant supporting a bridge
  • Replacing all of the teeth: implant supporting a full denture

Should you fit the criteria for dental implant surgery, at Florence Dentistry we are more than willing to walk you through the initial consultation of ottawa dental implant therapy and hold your hand through the recovery period.
